Hydration, Health and Performance

Water can often be perceived as a fluid that is readily available, but most people forget that keeping a certain level of hydration is of benefit to one’s overall health.

Bottled water needs to be accessible when you are at the office, going to the gym or at home. The concept of taking water straight from the tap is taking a miss of all of the benefits of drinking purified water. Unfiltered water contains harmful chemicals with chlorine being the most dangerous and has been linked to cancer causation, heart disease and other health problems.

Even without physical exercise, keeping well hydrated is essential for staying alert and engaged in mental and physical activities. Spring water is an essential nutrient and it needs to be incorporated into a regular diet.

Although a weak diet may affect your physical performance, dehydration can increase the risk of serious health issues which can range from mild discomfort to death. The effects of dehydration can be so serious that medical attention would need to be sought.

Employers have a role to play by ensuring their workers are well hydrated. Encourage them to drink water throughout the day and to take breaks around the water coolers.

While it is possible to consume too much water, the chances of that happening are slim in comparison to being dehydrated. The standard is eight glasses of water, but if you’re engaging in physical activity for that day, you’ll need to replace the drinks that you consume while you’re exercising, including before and after your workout.

Sugared drinks do contain water, however their added calories and additives pose a risk to a diet and overconsumption can lead to obesity. The healthier choice is to have purified spring water and to have other beverages in limited quantities to ensure you stay well hydrated throughout the day.
